The Macchi C.202 Falgore
was a World War II Italian Air Force fighter aircraft.
To make up for the lack of power of the C.200 Saetta, which was equipped with an air-cooled engine designed by Mario Castoldi, chief designer at Macchi, the C.202 Falgore (lightning) was
created by replacing it with a German liquid-cooled engine, the Daimler-Benz DB601 .
In 1936, the Italian Air Force
ordered each manufacturer to develop a lightly armed interceptor fighter based on a large expansion plan.
Macchi responded by submitting the C.200 Saetta.
The C.200 was judged to be the most superior of the competing aircraft, and
the decision was made to put it into production.
Thus was born Macchi's first land-based fighter, a company that had made a name for itself with its seaplanes.
When first deployed, there were a number of crashes due to wing problems, but
improvements to the wings made the aircraft extremely maneuverable and
it quickly became familiar to pilots who had come from biplanes.
Although the C.200 had an excellent aircraft design, its biggest drawback was its engine.
Equipped with an air-cooled engine, the C.200
could no longer compete on equal terms with other countries' excellent fighters.
For this reason, Macchi imported the excellent German liquid-cooled engine DB601 at the time and
replaced the C.200's engine, completing the work in the summer of 1940.
This liquid-cooled interceptor fighter
was named the C.202 Falgore.
The superior maneuverability of the C.200 and the increased climbing power and top speed of the high-powered engines
made it one of the best aircraft in the Italian Air Force.
The DB601 was later
produced under license by Alfa Romeo as the RA.1000R.C41 Monsoon.
Since mass production began in 1941,
1,150 C.202s have been produced by Macchi, Breda, and Ambrosini.
The basic shape of the C.202 has not changed, but
there are serials (series) from I to XV in the production block,
and there have been changes to the engines, such as
the shape of the nose air intake, and
other minor changes in the details.
The unique feature of the C.202's structure is that it
uses different lengths of main wings to counteract propeller torque, thereby creating a difference in lift.
